Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)
Day 28
Santa Fe, NM to Amarillo, TX (287 miles, 4,963 total)
Today was another day of driving east that would take us out of New Mexico and into the panhandle of Texas. After weeks of transitioning from one spectacular landscape to the next, it was a bit of a surprise to see nothing but mile upon mile of flat, dry plains. Hour upon hour. Upon hour. It was a bit like a visual detox after the unique geological formations we'd been treated to in Utah and Arizona.
Somewhere around our trillionth mile of yellowed grass, we saw a massive swath of black in the distance. As we drew closer, our noses told us before our eyes did that the break in the view was an immense herd of cattle. The smell was...overwhelming. As I heaved in the passenger seat, I sought the only refuge at hand - a little known use for clementines that they should really market more aggressively.
We reached Amarillo at dusk and pulled into our new home for the night. Having checked out the neighborhood and Jon having made yet another RV park friend, we headed out for a quick stop at Cavender's Boot City so he could pick up some Wranglers before dinner - because he'll surely be cultivating a cowboy aesthetic once we get back to New Jersey.
