The Long & Winding Road

Day 2

State College, PA to Elkhart, IN (458 miles, 684 total)

Today we drove...

and drove...
and then we drove some more.

And by "we," I mean Jon. Because this girl hasn't gotten behind a wheel in twenty years (though my persistent critique of his driving certainly does not acknowledge this fact).

Along the way from central Pennsylvania, through northern Ohio, and into north central Indiana, we saw Trump signs far outnumber those in support of Biden and plenty of rather vocal support for the former. This shot was taken at a rest stop that boasted a fairly massive Trump memorabilia gift shop. I hadn't thought that the MAGA hats Jon brought along would be relevant so early in the trip!

Just one day into the trip and it's already been a reminder of that thing which is both our greatest challenge and greatest strength as a nation - we are comprised of vastly different people, with widely divergent viewpoints informed by wildly variant life experiences. While in this most challenging year, this reality has more often than not torn us apart, I'm hopeful that we will once again come to view our heterogeneity as something that makes our great nation stronger. In order to do that, we need to stop judging each other and, instead, really listen to the "the other side" in an effort to gain a greater understanding of why they believe and think the way they do. That is what would make America great again.
